Meghalaya Faces 85% Rainfall Deficit in October, Raising Water Security Concerns
IN · Published Nov 4, 2026
• Meghalaya experienced a significant 85% rainfall deficit in October 2026, receiving only 38.3 mm of rainfall compared to the monthly normal of 255 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
• This follows a deficient southwest monsoon season, during which the state recorded a 60% rainfall shortfall from June to September.

Impact & Risks

The prolonged rainfall deficit has raised serious concerns about water security in Meghalaya. The state, which relies heavily on spring-fed water sources, is witnessing a decline in the sustainability of these natural springs. This has affected drinking water supplies for several communities and disrupted water availability for various Jal Jeevan Mission projects. The Public Health Engineering Department has identified 785 critical water sources for rejuvenation, highlighting the vulnerability of natural springs during extended dry periods.
