A glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) originating in Tibet has caused significant flash flooding in Nepal, with potential downstream impacts on India.
The Central Water Commission (CWC) has identified 31 glacial-lake cascade systems across Indian Himalayan states, including Sikkim, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

Impact & Risks

The immediate risk is to communities along the Gandak river system in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, including districts like Maharajganj and Kushinagar. A sudden GLOF pulse could cause severe flooding, especially if it coincides with heavy monsoon rainfall. Infrastructure near vulnerable areas, such as hydropower projects and settlements, is at high risk of damage. Experts stress the need for real-time monitoring and early warning systems to mitigate the impact of such disasters. The cascading effects of GLOFs could lead to loss of life, displacement, and significant economic damage in affected regions.
