India Faces 12.6% Monsoon Rainfall Deficit, Raising Agricultural Concerns
IN · Published Oct 9, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the southwest monsoon for 2026 ended with a 12.6% rainfall deficit, delivering 759.4 mm against the long-period average of 868.6 mm.
• This marks the weakest monsoon performance of the century.

Impact & Risks

The monsoon deficit is expected to have a significant impact on agricultural production, particularly in the South and Northeast regions. Rice production is projected to decline by 6.5% compared to last year, and rural inflation is rising, with rice prices up by 7.7%. The shortfall in reservoir replenishment could further affect the upcoming rabi crop, which relies heavily on irrigation. This situation may exacerbate food inflation and economic stress in rural areas, potentially leading to broader socio-economic challenges.
