A late summer heat wave is affecting much of the United States, with dangerous temperatures forecasted across the Southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley through Wednesday.
The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for approximately 97 million people, with temperatures expected to reach 100°F (37.8°C) in some areas.

Impact & Risks

The heat wave poses significant risks to public health, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and outdoor workers. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity can lead to heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke. Meteorologist Jeff Masters warns that the combination of intense heat, high humidity, and long duration could result in increased mortality. Communities are taking measures to provide cooling centers and hydration resources, but the heat is already impacting daily activities, including school operations and sports events.
