Severe Storms and Heavy Rain Expected in South Plains
US · Published Oct 14, 2026
• The South Plains region is experiencing unusual atmospheric moisture levels for mid-October, leading to scattered thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
• A FLASH FLOOD WATCH has been issued by the National Weather Service for the northeastern KCBD/FOX34 viewing area through Wednesday and for the southern viewing area through Thursday night.

Impact & Risks

Heavy rainfall may lead to localised flooding, especially in areas east of Interstate 27 and Highway 87. Strong wind gusts and large hail pose risks to property and safety, particularly off the Caprock. While the tornado risk is low, it cannot be ruled out entirely. Residents in the affected areas should remain vigilant, especially during the Severe Thunderstorm Watch period. Cooler conditions following the storms may bring additional challenges, including strong winds and significantly lower temperatures.
