Tropical Storm Nolo Approaches Hawaii with Heavy Rain
• Tropical Storm Nolo is currently located approximately 295 miles south of South Point, Hawaii, and 475 miles southeast of Honolulu, Hawaii, as of 8:00 PM HST on September 23,
• The storm is moving west-northwest at 7 mph (11 km/h) with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 km/h). Nolo is expected to turn sharply northward overnight and approach the Big Island of Hawaii on Friday and Saturday. Forecasts indicate that Nolo may strengthen into a hurricane by Thursday night and potentially become a major hurricane by the weekend. Tropical-storm-force winds currently extend up to 80 miles (130 km) from the storm's center, and heavy rainfall is anticipated across the Hawaiian Islands.
Impact & Risks
Hurricane conditions are possible in Hawaii County starting Friday night, as a Hurricane Watch remains in effect. Rainfall totals of 15 to 20 inches, with maximum amounts of 35 inches, are expected on the Big Island, potentially causing catastrophic flooding and mudslides, especially in steep terrain. Maui may experience 5 to 10 inches of rain, with maximum amounts of 20 inches, leading to life-threatening flooding and mudslides. Other Hawaiian Islands could see 1 to 3 inches of rain, with isolated flooding possible. Storm surge of 1 to 3 feet is forecast for Hawaii County, accompanied by dangerous waves. Swells generated by Nolo are expected to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents along east and south-facing shores.
