Heavy Rainfall Predicted Over Nepal and East India Due to Monsoon 'Low'
• A monsoon 'low' pressure system over south Uttar Pradesh and adjoining north-east Madhya Pradesh is driving heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Nepal and parts of East India, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified this system as a conventional monsoon 'low', while the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Beijing Centre has linked it to deadly floods and landslides in Nepal.
Impact & Risks
The heavy rainfall has already caused flash floods and landslides in Nepal, with accumulated rainfall reaching intense levels due to orographic lifting along the Himalayan foothills. In India, regions such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand are at risk of localised flooding, landslides, and other rain-induced hazards. The WMO has warned of continued risks of flash floods, debris flows, and landslides in Nepal and East India over the next few days. Localised rainfall totals in East India could exceed 25 cm, raising the potential for significant disruptions and damage.
