• The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Stafford, Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties in the Washington D.C. region until 10 p.m. on August 20,
• Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected, with some storms potentially becoming severe. Areas near and east of Interstate 95 are under a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe storms, while areas to the west are under a Level 1 risk. The storms are expected to bring heavy rain, lightning, damaging wind gusts of 55-70 mph, and a slight risk of tornadoes. The most active period for storms is anticipated before 8 p.m., with the highest tornado risk northeast of D.C. toward Baltimore.

Residents in the affected areas, particularly near and east of Interstate 95, may experience severe weather conditions, including damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and isolated tornadoes. Flash flooding is a concern in areas northeast of D.C., especially where multiple storms occur in quick succession. The risk of severe weather is lower in regions with significant cloud cover, but sunnier areas may see more intense storms.
