US · Published Jun 22, 2026
Illinois has experienced an unprecedented number of tornadoes in 2026, with 148 confirmed tornadoes as of June, surpassing the previous record of 142 set in
According to CBS News, the state typically averages 54 tornadoes annually, but recent years have seen a significant increase. On June 11, a tornado outbreak brought 21 confirmed tornadoes to northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, including two EF-3 tornadoes in Streator, Illinois, and Hebron, Indiana, with winds exceeding 135 mph. Another event on June 17 added 10 more tornadoes, primarily in downstate Illinois. The National Weather Service (NWS) has attributed this rise in tornado activity to shifting weather patterns, possibly influenced by climate change. Illinois now leads the nation in tornado counts for the third time in four years, a notable shift from the traditional Tornado Alley states.

Why It's Important?

The increased tornado activity has caused widespread damage across Illinois and neighboring states. The EF-3 tornadoes in Streator, Illinois, and Hebron, Indiana, caused significant destruction, including structural damage and numerous injuries, though no fatalities were reported. The June 11 outbreak alone resulted in 21 tornadoes, with additional tornadoes confirmed on June 17. The storms have led to downed trees, damaged roofs, and localized flooding in some areas. The rise in tornado frequency and intensity poses ongoing risks to residents, infrastructure, and emergency response systems, particularly as the state continues to experience severe weather events.
