Heavy Rainfall Expected in South India as Northeast Monsoon Gains Strength
IN · Published Oct 18, 2026
• The northeast monsoon has intensified over the South Peninsula, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and South Interior Karnataka.
• The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 21 cm in Tamil Nadu during the 24 hours ending Sunday morning.

Impact & Risks

The ongoing heavy rainfall poses risks of waterlogging, localised flooding, and disruptions to daily life in affected areas, particularly Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. Agricultural activities may be impacted due to excessive rainfall, potentially affecting crop health and soil conditions. Coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema may also experience heavy showers, which could lead to travel delays and infrastructure strain. While the low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea is not expected to have an immediate impact, the evolving systems in the Bay of Bengal could bring further rainfall to South India later in the week.
