Pre-Dawn 'Space Jellyfish' Illuminates Tampa Bay Skies

Residents of Tampa Bay were treated to a stunning pre-dawn display on Thursday, May 21, 2026, as a neon-blue cloud resembling a glowing jellyfish appeared in the sky around 6:00 a.m.
The phenomenon, identified as a noctilucent cloud, was caused by the exhaust from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch.
The rocket, part of a Starlink mission, lifted off from Cape Canaveral just before 6:05 a.m.

Why It's Important?

The event posed no risks to the public but provided a rare and awe-inspiring visual experience for those awake early enough to witness it. Tampa Bay's location downrange from Cape Canaveral makes it a prime spot for observing such phenomena, especially during pre-sunrise launches. The visibility of these clouds depends on specific atmospheric conditions, including the presence of ultra-cold temperatures and particulates in the mesosphere. While the display was purely aesthetic, it highlights the growing intersection of human activity, such as rocket launches, with natural atmospheric processes.
