The increased lightning activity has had significant impacts across Florida, which leads the U.S. in lightning-related fatalities this year. Seven people have died from lightning strikes in the state, including a mother and her child in South Florida and a man in Fort De Soto Park. Lightning has also caused property damage, including a fire at the USF St. Petersburg Marine Science Lab and an apartment fire in Wesley Chapel that displaced 200 residents. With El Niño expected to bring more severe weather, including a higher risk of tornadoes, the potential for additional lightning-related incidents remains high (Yahoo News, 2026).
