Telangana enters dry spell as monsoon withdraws

• Telangana is transitioning into a dry spell following the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon.
• The state recorded 615.5 mm of rainfall between June and September, which is 17% below the normal average of 740.6 mm.

Impact & Risks

The rainfall deficit has led to low water storage levels in irrigation tanks across Telangana. As of October 3, 17,677 out of 21,500 monitored tanks had less than 50% of their storage capacity, with 12,944 tanks holding either no water or less than 25% of their normal storage. This could impact irrigation and groundwater recharge in rural areas. The ongoing El Niño phenomenon may also contribute to weaker rainfall patterns, although local systems could still bring sporadic rain later in the season.
