A new heat dome is expected to settle over the central United States this weekend and persist into next week, impacting over 50 million residents from Texas to North Dakota, according to AccuWeather forecasts.
Texas is already experiencing dangerously high heat index values exceeding 105°F (40.6°C), prompting heat advisories from the National Weather Service.

Impact & Risks

The extreme heat poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing conditions. Heat above 80°F (26.7°C) can strain organ function, while temperatures exceeding 103°F (39.4°C) are considered dangerous. Heat-related illnesses, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, are major concerns. The National Weather Service warns that even routine outdoor activities may become hazardous during peak heat hours. Additionally, infrastructure such as train tracks may buckle under the intense heat, as seen during earlier heat domes this month. Heat is already the leading weather-related cause of death in the U.S., accounting for approximately 2,000 fatalities annually.
