Texas Braces for Record Electricity Demand Amid Summer Heat
US · Published Jun 9, 2026
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has projected record-breaking electricity demand for the summer of 2026, with peak usage expected to reach 92,211 megawatts (MW). This surpasses the previous summer peaks of 83,679 MW in 2025 and 85,198 MW in
The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center forecasts above-normal temperatures across Texas, which is likely to drive increased air-conditioning use during extended periods of extreme heat. ERCOT has identified a critical challenge during the 8-9 PM window, when electricity demand remains high but solar generation declines as the sun sets. To address these challenges, ERCOT plans to utilize enhanced situational awareness tools and has developed mitigation strategies for new transmission constraints in the grid.

Why It's Important?

The anticipated record electricity demand poses significant risks to grid reliability, particularly during peak hours and evening transitions when solar power generation decreases. Texans may face potential power shortages or rolling blackouts if demand outpaces supply. Additionally, transmission constraints in certain areas could limit the movement of electricity, requiring careful management to avoid disruptions. The extreme heat expected this summer could also exacerbate health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those without access to air conditioning.
