The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has increased the odds of tropical development in the Gulf of America to 50% over the next seven days.
The system, designated as Invest 90L, marks the first invest of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.

Why It's Important?

The primary risks include widespread and locally catastrophic flooding across the southern U.S., particularly in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. A Level 3 out of 4 flood threat has been issued through Thursday, with the potential for life-threatening flash floods. Emergency rescues have already been reported in Texas, where first responders aided residents trapped by rising waters. The combination of tropical moisture and a stalled cold front is expected to exacerbate the situation, with slow-moving thunderstorms increasing the risk of prolonged flooding.
