• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day weather alert for Kerala, forecasting widespread rain, thunderstorms, and lightning across the state.
• On Saturday, October 17, five districts—Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur—are under an orange alert for very heavy rainfall, with expected precipitation between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within 24 hours.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall and accompanying thunderstorms pose risks of waterlogging, localised flooding, and disruptions to daily life in the affected districts. Hilly and low-lying areas are particularly vulnerable to landslides and flash floods. Gusty winds may lead to damage to weak structures and trees, while lightning could pose a threat to outdoor activities. Residents in Lakshadweep may also experience similar conditions, with heavy rainfall expected in isolated areas.
