IN · Published Oct 23, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Kerala from 21 to 25 October 2026 due to a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Tamil Nadu coast.
• On 22 October, heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40–50 km/h are expected at isolated locations.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall has led to the closure of schools in Thoothukudi and Puducherry, including government, government-aided, and private institutions. Urban and suburban areas in Thoothukudi are experiencing persistent rain, and mechanised boat fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea. The rainfall may lead to waterlogging, disruption of daily activities, and potential damage to infrastructure in affected areas. Gusty winds could also pose risks to weak structures and trees.
