Magnitude 5.3 Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Tremors Felt in Nepal
• A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Tibet on 9 September 2026, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The tremors were felt in Nepal, which is still recovering from catastrophic floods that occurred on 26 August. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometres, according to EMSC, while India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported the magnitude as 5.
• No immediate reports of casualties or significant damage have been received. This marks the second earthquake in Tibet within a week, following a 5.1-magnitude tremor recorded earlier.
Impact & Risks
The earthquake adds to the challenges faced by the Himalayan region, which has recently been impacted by devastating floods. Nepal's disaster authority reported over 1,357 deaths and 5,326 missing persons due to the floods. Rescue operations are ongoing, with hydropower workers among those still trapped. The tremors may increase the risk of landslides and further destabilise the region, which is already geologically active and vulnerable to natural disasters.
