US · Published May 18, 2026
The central United States is bracing for a significant severe weather event, with damaging winds, large hail, and strong tornadoes expected through Monday.
According to The Washington Post, the Storm Prediction Center has issued an enhanced risk (Level 3 of 5) for Sunday, escalating to a moderate risk (Level 4 of 5) on Monday.
Areas at highest risk include northeast Kansas, southeastern Nebraska, and parts of the Corn Belt.

Why It's Important?

The severe weather poses a high risk to communities across the Plains and Midwest. Tornadoes, some rated EF2 or stronger, could cause significant damage to homes and infrastructure. Large hail and wind gusts up to 80 mph threaten vehicles, crops, and power lines. The risk of flooding is also present in areas where storms repeatedly pass. Residents in northeast Kansas, southeastern Nebraska, and surrounding regions should prepare for potentially life-threatening conditions.
