Tripura Minister Advocates Flooding Inclusion in PMFBY Guidelines

Tripura’s Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, has proposed the inclusion of flooding as a 'local natural calamity' under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) guidelines.
This suggestion was made during the National Conference on Agriculture for the Kharif Campaign 2026 in New Delhi, organized by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.
Nath emphasized the challenges faced by paddy farmers in low-lying areas of Tripura, who suffer significant losses due to field inundation during heavy rains but are currently ineligible for insurance benefits under PMFBY.

Why It's Important?

The proposed inclusion of flooding in PMFBY guidelines could provide much-needed financial relief to paddy farmers in Tripura, particularly those in low-lying areas prone to heavy rainfall and flooding. Without this change, farmers may continue to face significant economic losses without adequate compensation. Additionally, the state’s push for hybrid paddy cultivation and organic farming could improve agricultural yields and sustainability, but these efforts require consistent funding and resource allocation. The lack of insurance coverage for flood-related crop damage remains a critical risk for the region’s predominantly small and marginal farmers.
