Union County Downgrades to Stage 1 Water Conservation Amid Improved Drought Conditions
US · Published Nov 5, 2026
• Union County, North Carolina, has transitioned from Stage 2 to Stage 1 of its Water Shortage Response Plan, effective 5th November
• This change comes as drought conditions in the Catawba-Wateree River Basin and the southeastern United States have improved. The decision was made in coordination with the Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group (CW-DMAG). Stage 2 restrictions, which included higher water rates to encourage conservation, had been in place since 15th May

Impact & Risks

The transition to Stage 1 indicates a reduction in the severity of drought conditions in Union County. However, water conservation measures remain in place to ensure sustainable usage. Residential customers must adhere to specific irrigation schedules based on their address, while commercial and industrial users face restrictions on water usage, including limitations on transporting water from county hydrants. Non-compliance with these measures could lead to penalties, and residents are encouraged to stay informed about any changes in water conservation stages.
