Graupel forms in cold weather conditions when snowflakes come into contact with supercooled water droplets in the atmosphere. These droplets freeze instantly upon contact, creating a layer of ice around the snowflake. This process, known as riming, results in the soft, rounded appearance of graupel. It usually occurs in clouds where temperatures are below freezing and there is an abundance of supercooled water.
