The Growing Frequency of Snow-Eater Heat Waves

Research shows that 'snow-eater' heat waves are becoming more frequent and occurring earlier in the year. Since the mid-1800s, the area affected by these heat waves has expanded by approximately 102,000 square kilometers per century. In the Mountain West region, three to five such events now occur annually, compared to fewer in the past. This trend is attributed to changing climate patterns, which are causing warmer temperatures and altering seasonal cycles.
