NASA's New Horizons Spacecraft Awakens 6 Billion Miles from Earth

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, located 6 billion miles from Earth, has resumed operations after a 321-day hibernation period.
The probe, which previously made historic flybys of Pluto in 2015 and the Kuiper Belt object Arrokoth in 2019, is now preparing for its next mission.

Impact & Risks

The reactivation of New Horizons provides a unique opportunity to study the outermost regions of the solar system and beyond. The data collected could significantly enhance our understanding of the heliosphere and interstellar space. However, the spacecraft's longevity depends on its diminishing power supply, which is generated by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator. If the power supply depletes faster than expected, it could limit the mission's ability to conduct further scientific observations.
