Understanding North India's Winter Pollution Crisis
Global · Published Oct 4, 2026
• Winter pollution in northern India is a recurring issue, driven by crop stubble burning and Diwali firecrackers.
• Despite new measures in Delhi, neighbouring states lack robust plans, exacerbating the problem.

Delhi's Pollution Mitigation Plan

Delhi has introduced a science-based pollution mitigation plan, including curbs on construction, stricter vehicle and industry checks, and measures against open waste burning. The plan also includes higher parking charges, staggered office timings, and work-from-home mandates to reduce pollution. However, these measures may not significantly lower pollution peaks, as they do not address external factors like crop stubble burning and firecracker usage, which contribute to over 60% of Delhi's winter pollution.
