Grass seed reacts differently to frost depending on its stage of growth. If the seed has not yet germinated, it will go dormant in the soil and can survive until warmer temperatures return. However, if the seed has already germinated and started to sprout, it becomes vulnerable. Without a strong root system, the young grass may not have the energy reserves to survive a frost.
