India's Clean Energy Surge: Power Sector Emissions Flatline
• India's power sector emissions have remained stable for two years, thanks to a significant increase in clean energy capacity.
• Solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear power have collectively met the country's growing electricity demand, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Key Drivers of Clean Energy Expansion
Over the past two years, India has added 77GW of solar capacity, 11GW of wind, 5GW of hydro, and 0.6GW of nuclear capacity. This growth in clean energy has been sufficient to meet the additional power requirement of 63TWh, equivalent to the total consumption of Switzerland. The delayed monsoon and intensified heatwaves caused by El Niño in 2026 also contributed to increased electricity demand, which was met entirely by clean energy.
