The Maharashtra agriculture department is leveraging remote sensing and satellite imagery to enhance transparency in horticulture crop insurance.
This initiative aims to curb fraudulent claims and ensure genuine farmers receive timely compensation.

How the Technology Works

Farmers applying for insurance must now conduct digital crop surveys and geo-tag their orchards. The declared area in the insurance application is cross-verified with satellite imagery and digital records. If discrepancies arise, the area recorded through the digital crop survey system will be considered the final eligible area for insurance coverage. In cases where remote sensing data suggests an orchard does not exist, farmers are issued notices for clarification, followed by physical inspections if necessary.
