Applying nitrogen fertilizer too late in the season can disrupt the natural dormancy process of warm-season grasses. Nitrogen encourages leaf growth, which can weaken the plant by diverting energy away from root storage. This results in tender, soft growth that is more susceptible to damage from cold weather and fungal diseases like large patch. To avoid these issues, the last nitrogen application should be made four to six weeks before the first expected frost.
