How Climate Shocks Impact India's Water and Vegetation

• A district-level study reveals how temperature and rainfall anomalies are reshaping water availability and vegetation health across India, with significant regional disparities.

Temperature Anomalies and Their Impact

Rising temperature anomalies consistently reduce surface water and vegetation health in India. Even slight increases in temperature lead to a 0.9% drop in surface water index values and over a 4% decline in vegetation index values. Warmer periods accelerate evapotranspiration, causing soils and shallow water bodies to dry faster, which in turn stresses vegetation and reduces water availability.
