Geomagnetic storms are disturbances in Earth's magnetosphere caused by solar wind. These storms are classified on a scale from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme). The stronger the storm, the farther south the northern lights can be seen. For example, a G1 storm might make the aurora visible in northern states like Michigan and Maine, while a G3 storm could extend visibility as far south as Illinois and Oregon.
