Hypothermia happens when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it, leading to a dangerously low body temperature. It can occur in extremely cold weather or even in milder conditions if a person is wet, exposed to wind, or inadequately dressed. Early symptoms include shivering, fatigue, and confusion. Severe signs include slurred speech, slowed breathing, poor coordination, and drowsiness. Hypothermia is a medical emergency. Call 911 if you suspect someone has severe hypothermia, move them to a warm shelter, remove wet clothing, and use dry blankets to warm them gently. Avoid giving alcohol or using direct heat to warm the person.
