El Niño is a climate phenomenon characterized by significant warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. This warming releases vast amounts of heat into the atmosphere, which can weaken the polar vortex. As the vortex destabilizes, it becomes more likely for Arctic air to move southward, causing dramatic temperature drops in regions that were previously mild.
