Atlantic Hurricane Season 2026: Below-Average Activity Expected
US · Published Jun 1, 2026
The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season begins today, with NOAA predicting a below-normal level of activity.
The forecast includes 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes, and up to 3 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).
This reduced activity is attributed to the development of El Niño, which increases atmospheric wind shear and suppresses hurricane formation.

Why It's Important?

Although the forecast suggests fewer storms, the potential for significant impacts remains. Coastal and inland areas alike are at risk of heavy rainfall, flooding, and wind damage from any storms that do form. Warmer sea surface temperatures, linked to climate change, could still lead to stronger storms and heavier rainfall. NOAA and other experts stress the importance of preparedness, as even a single hurricane can have devastating consequences for affected communities.
