Global Agriculture Faces Growing Water Risks Amid Climate Challenges
US · Published Jun 12, 2026
Water-related challenges are increasingly threatening global agriculture, with issues such as droughts, floods, and declining water quality becoming more frequent.
According to a report, approximately 11% of rainfed croplands and 14% of pasturelands experience frequent droughts, while over 60% of irrigated croplands are in areas of high water stress.

Why It's Important?

The increasing frequency of water-related challenges poses significant risks to food security and agricultural productivity worldwide. Droughts, in particular, are the most damaging natural hazard for agriculture, affecting both rainfed and irrigated lands. Poor water quality and degraded ecosystems further exacerbate these issues, potentially leading to reduced crop yields and higher food prices. The interconnected nature of global food supply chains means that water risks in one region can have far-reaching impacts on food availability and economic stability elsewhere.
