NOAA Confirms El Niño Conditions with Strengthening Expected
US · Published Jun 17, 2026
The NOAA Climate Prediction Center has issued an El Niño Advisory, confirming the presence of El Niño conditions as of June
Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific are above average, with the Niño-3.4 index at +0.7°C and Niño-1+2 at +2.1°C. Subsurface ocean temperatures also remain significantly above average. These conditions are expected to intensify, with a 63% chance of a very strong El Niño developing by the Northern Hemisphere winter of 2026-

Why It's Important?

The strengthening El Niño could lead to significant global weather disruptions. Regions like the U.S. Southwest may experience increased rainfall and flood risks, while the Pacific Northwest could face reduced precipitation. Globally, the event may suppress Atlantic hurricane activity but increase East Pacific hurricane activity. Drought conditions could worsen in parts of Southeast Asia, the Amazon, and Africa, while other areas may face heightened flood risks. Elevated global temperatures are also expected, compounding the effects of climate change.
