NASA has initiated a critical mission to save the Swift Observatory, which has been losing altitude due to recent solar storms.
On July 3, 2026, Northrop Grumman launched the Katalyst Space Technologies’ Link spacecraft aboard a Pegasus rocket from the Marshall Islands.

Impact & Risks

The mission is vital for extending the operational life of the Swift Observatory, which plays a key role in studying high-energy cosmic events like gamma-ray bursts and supernovae. Without intervention, the observatory was at risk of burning up in Earth’s atmosphere by October 2026. The success of this mission will ensure the continuation of critical astronomical research, but failure could result in the loss of a valuable scientific asset.
