Sunscreen Misinformation on TikTok Raises Concerns About Sun Safety
US · Published Jun 19, 2026
A recent study published in PLOS Digital Health highlights the growing spread of misinformation about sunscreen on TikTok.
Despite the majority of videos promoting sunscreen use, a small but highly engaging subset of content claims that sunscreen is harmful, citing unverified risks such as endocrine disruption, contamination of breastmilk, and environmental damage.

Why It's Important?

The spread of sunscreen misinformation poses risks to public health, particularly among younger audiences such as Gen Z, who are highly active on TikTok. According to the AAD, nearly half of Americans scored poorly on a sun safety quiz, with 33% of Gen Z respondents receiving a 'D' or 'F'. This lack of understanding, combined with misleading social media content, could lead to reduced sunscreen use and increased exposure to harmful UV rays. Potential consequences include higher rates of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. The study underscores the need for accurate information to counteract these risks.
