The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a stark warning about the growing impact of wildfires and heatwaves on global air quality and public health.
According to the WMO's latest Air Quality and Climate Bulletin, extreme wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity, releasing highly toxic smoke that poses significant health risks.

Impact & Risks

The increasing prevalence of wildfires and heatwaves is contributing to a rise in air pollution, with significant health and environmental consequences. Toxic wildfire smoke, which contains fine particles more harmful than those from other sources, is linked to nearly 100,000 additional deaths annually between 2010 and 2018, according to the WMO. Ground-level ozone pollution, exacerbated by heatwaves, poses further risks, potentially leading to tens of thousands of premature deaths due to respiratory diseases. Additionally, aerosols and microplastics are altering atmospheric and environmental conditions, accelerating ice melt and polluting remote ecosystems. These pollutants are not only a threat to human health but also to wildlife and global ecosystems.
