Understanding Wind Chill and Its Effects

• The National Weather Service (NWS) defines wind chill as the perceived decrease in temperature felt by exposed skin due to wind and cold.
• It is calculated using a specific formula that factors in air temperature and wind speed.

Impact & Risks

Wind chill poses significant risks to people and animals, especially in extreme cold conditions. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin within 30 minutes when wind chill values drop below -19°F (-28°C). Prolonged exposure can lead to hypothermia, a life-threatening condition. Pets are also vulnerable to these effects and should not be left outside for extended periods. While wind chill accelerates heat loss, it does not freeze water, pipes, or plants, as these objects only cool to the actual air temperature.
