A new report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveals that only 20% of sunscreens on the market meet safety and effectiveness standards (KCRA, 2026).
The 2026 Guide to Sunscreens analyzed 2,990 products, recommending 597 that provide adequate protection against UVA and UVB rays.

Impact & Risks

The report underscores the potential health risks of certain chemical sunscreen ingredients, such as oxybenzone and homosalate, which have been linked to hormonal disruptions and other health issues. Consumers are advised to avoid products with these chemicals and opt for mineral-based sunscreens. The findings also highlight the environmental impact of some ingredients, like oxybenzone, which has been banned in several locations due to its harmful effects on marine ecosystems.
