Record-breaking heat wave to impact central and eastern US
US · Published Jun 30, 2026
A dangerous and prolonged heat wave is intensifying across the central and eastern United States, with the National Weather Service warning of extreme heat conditions.
High temperatures in the 90s to low 100s (°F) combined with high humidity are expected to result in heat indices of 100-115°F.

Impact & Risks

The heat wave poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those without access to air conditioning. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures and limited nighttime cooling could lead to heat-related illnesses. The heat dome is also expected to create hazardous conditions across more than two dozen states, with limited relief even during nighttime hours.
