NASA's satellite data has revealed early signs of El Niño impacting marine conditions in the Pacific Ocean, with warmer sea surface temperatures, higher sea surface heights, and reduced chlorophyll-a levels.
These changes are indicative of a strong El Niño event, which the NOAA Climate Prediction Center estimates has a 90% likelihood of persisting into 2027, with a 69% chance of being historically strong.

Impact & Risks

The reduction in phytoplankton, which supports zooplankton, fish, seabirds, and marine mammals, could disrupt the marine food web. Fisheries along the U.S. West Coast and the eastern equatorial Pacific are particularly vulnerable. Cold-water species may migrate north or to deeper waters, potentially reducing their growth and reproduction rates. Conversely, warm-water species like tuna may become more abundant closer to shore, creating new fishing opportunities.
