UN Climate Panel Declares Worst-Case Emissions Scenario 'Implausible'
US · Published May 19, 2026
The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has announced that the worst-case emissions scenario, known as RCP 8.5, is no longer considered plausible.
This scenario, which assumed unchecked fossil fuel use and no climate action, projected catastrophic global warming by the end of the century.
However, advancements in renewable energy, climate policies, and emission trends have made this scenario increasingly unlikely.

Why It's Important?

The retirement of RCP 8.5 as a likely scenario reduces the probability of the most catastrophic climate outcomes, such as extreme temperature increases and severe weather events. However, the next-worst scenarios still pose substantial risks, including stronger storms, prolonged droughts, and rising sea levels. Vulnerable communities and ecosystems remain at high risk, emphasizing the need for continued climate action and adaptation measures.
