Tick-Borne Diseases on the Rise: ER Visits Spike Across the U.S.
US · Published May 24, 2026
Emergency room visits for tick bites have surged by over 25% nationwide in April 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to CDC data.
The Northeast has been particularly affected as tick populations increase with the onset of warmer weather.
Ticks, small parasites that feed on blood, can transmit a variety of diseases, including Lyme disease, alpha-gal syndrome, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis.

Why It's Important?

The rise in tick-borne diseases poses significant health risks, particularly in regions experiencing increased tick activity. Lyme disease can lead to severe complications, including arthritis and neurological issues, if left untreated. Alpha-gal syndrome can cause life-threatening allergic reactions, while diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever and ehrlichiosis can result in organ failure, respiratory distress, and even death in severe cases. Vulnerable populations, such as older adults and those with weakened immune systems, face heightened risks. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to managing these illnesses effectively.
