• Global economic losses from natural catastrophes reached at least $242 billion in the first nine months of 2026, with insured losses totalling approximately $92 billion, according to Gallagher Re's Q3 2026 Natural Catastrophe and Climate Report.
• These figures represent the lowest economic and insured losses for the first three quarters of a year since 2015 and 2019, respectively.

Impact & Risks

The relatively low losses have bolstered the insurance industry's earnings and reinsurance capacity ahead of the January 2027 renewal season. However, frequent disasters such as severe storms, wildfires, and floods continue to pose significant risks globally. Inflation and increased exposure to risks are also driving up claims costs. The report highlights the potential development of a strong El Niño, which could further influence catastrophe risks and insurers' operations in the coming year.
