Geomagnetic Storms and Solar Activity Expected May 17-19
US · Published May 18, 2026
Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are forecasted from May 17 to May 19, 2023, as Earth encounters a stream of fast-moving solar wind.
On May 18, storm levels may escalate to G2 (Moderate) due to a coronal mass ejection (CME) grazing Earth's magnetic field.
Additionally, a massive sunspot on the sun's farside has been observed emitting strong solar flares, including two X1-class and several M-class flares.

Why It's Important?

The geomagnetic storms could disrupt satellite operations, GPS systems, and power grids, particularly at higher latitudes. High-latitude regions may also experience auroras due to the increased solar activity. The approaching sunspot could pose further risks of solar flares and CMEs impacting Earth in the near future.
