NASA has initiated Phase B development for the Dynamic Atmosphere Ionosphere Explorer (DAPHNE) mission, which aims to investigate the relationship between Earth's lower atmosphere and the upper atmosphere where space weather phenomena occur.
Using two identical satellites, the mission will collect data on winds, temperature, and atmospheric composition in the thermosphere.

Impact & Risks

Space weather can disrupt satellite operations, GPS systems, and other technologies integral to modern life. DAPHNE's findings could mitigate these risks by improving predictive models and safeguarding future human exploration beyond Earth's magnetic field. The mission's success is vital for advancing space weather readiness and protecting critical infrastructure.
