NOAA Confirms Below-Average 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season
US · Published May 22, 2026
NOAA has released its 2026 Atlantic hurricane season forecast, predicting 8 to 14 named storms, including 3 to 6 hurricanes and 1 to 3 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).
This outlook is based on a combination of factors, including a developing El Niño, which is expected to suppress storm activity in the Atlantic while increasing it in the Pacific.
Warmer-than-average Atlantic ocean temperatures and weaker trade winds may still contribute to storm formation.

Why It's Important?

While the forecast suggests reduced activity, the Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard remain at risk for significant impacts from even a single storm. The petrochemical industry, concentrated along the Gulf Coast, could face disruptions as companies evacuate offshore platforms during storm threats. Inland areas are also at risk, as hurricanes can bring heavy rainfall and flooding far from the coast. NOAA's updated track cone maps aim to improve preparedness for these inland hazards.
